Why a community shop?

What is a community shop?

A community shop is owned and run by the community for the benefit of the community. Anyone over the age of 18 can become a member and take an equal part in the running of the shop, one member one vote regardless of how many shares were purchased to join.

As with any business a community shop must be profitable but those profits are reinvested in the business to offer more services or directly into the community to support local projects or community events.

There are many reasons for setting up a community shop but underlying all those reasons it is to create a community hub where all members of the community can come together, interact and socialise.

The only people who financially benefit from our community shop are the paid managers and cooks, everyone else is a volunteer, including the members that form the management Board of Directors.

Community events

Christmas event

Since 2012 the community shop has hosted "The lights on the holly tree" in the shop grounds, supplying soup, mince pies and mulled wine.

The Easter Bunny

The Easter Bunny visits the shop to give out Easter Eggs to the children who can solve the puzzles that he has hidden around the shop and the garden.
